Resurrection

Resurrection

The gospels tell us that it was still dark when Mary came to the tomb; Jesus had already risen. The light of the resurrected Christ floods the scene just as he floods into our darkness.

The tree in the picture symbolises the cross and at the bottom of this lies the placard with INRI on it. The cross is now a blossoming tree of life. Perhaps a faint figure on the tree suggests itself with the arms now spread high with the life-giving leaves. Also there are hints of blood on the tree.  Jesus is crucified and risen but the scars of Jesus are carried into the resurrection just as our sufferings are somehow transformed when we come into his new life.

The stones that are piled up by the cross represent the walls that have prevented us from accepting the light into our own lives, perhaps in our families, in our parishes, in our communities, in our world.

The light of resurrection embraces us, bodies and spirits. Ours is not a spiritual experience only; it is also bodily.  It is material and the resurrection will embrace the whole of creation, the whole cosmos...
