Big Bang

Big
Bang

The painting shows the overflow of love into creation, into the Big Bang explosion at the start of time, calculated at 13.7 billion years ago. In the first microseconds the universe began with a singularity of infinitesimally small size and has been expanding outwards ever since.

On either side of the explosion are two often conflicting approaches to truth and knowledge.

On the left is the science, symbolised by equations relating to the Big Bang. Science claims that the way to know is through proof by measurement, analysis by mathematics and empirical methods.

On the right side of the picture are fragments of Genesis chapter 1 which is a religious account, differing from science, but a literary genre with deep insights and truths.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good…”

It is unfortunate that these two approaches have often become opposed in the popular mind. A mature Christian faith embraces both of them.
