Moby Dick

Moby Dick

Herman Melville’s classic story of Ahab’s obsessive search for the whale, Moby Dick, made me think how we can all become enmeshed and embroiled in a pursuit for that which ultimately destroys us. It could be a striving for power, wealth, fame, pleasure, revenge or a combination of these which can issue in addictions or obsessions, in controlling or manipulative behaviour, or in narcissistic and selfish attitudes including violence towards others....

But God offers us the path of life.... He loves us unconditionally ..... He calls us to love ourselves, to be gentle with ourselves, to be at peace .... he calls us to find ourselves by showing love to others .... In the painting this path is signified by the circle that encompasses the whale and the three red coloured glimmers of light represent the love of the Trinity. Ahab heard his chief mate Starbuck trying to persuade him to come away from the destructive path he was following and to go back to his wife and child; he didn’t listen. Do we listen to God's voice?
